- A drainage plane — typically a rainscreen furring strip system — behind the panels, so any moisture that does get past the cladding has somewhere to drain and air to dry it out, rather than sitting against the sheathing.
- Proper water-resistive barrier installation and lapping underneath the panels, installed before the first board goes up.
- Correctly flashed horizontal joints where panels stop and start, sloped and lapped to shed water down and out, never trapping it.
- Battens fastened per the manufacturer's on-center spacing and fastener schedule — not "close enough," since the fastening pattern is part of what keeps the panel from cupping or working loose over time.
- Correct gaps at panel butt joints and around openings, caulked per Hardie's published specifications rather than by habit.
- Proper starter strips and base flashing at the foundation line, which is the single most common spot we find water intrusion on older homes we're re-siding.
